Sydney ‘spaceship’ has $15m price tag

No. 73A Victoria Rd, Bellevue Hill has a $15 million price guide.

Bellevue Hill’s Alec Tzannes-designed ‘Oculus’ has hit the market with a $15 million price guide and it’s without doubt one of spring’s most interesting listings.

Property records show the six-bedroom, five-bathroom home with a six-car garage — which looks a bit like a spaceship because of its semicircular design — is owned by artist Jillian Gower and her husband, Philip.

The house at 73A Victoria Rd is listed with the Sotheby’s managing director, Micheal Pallier, who is selling it via an expressions of interest campaign.

The house that the Gowers purchased — for $6.7 million in 2008 — was designed by the architect Frank Fox in the 1960s.

In his 2014 redesign, Alexander ‘Alec’ Tzannes of Tzannes Associates kept the original shell but completely re-did the interiors, collaborating with Juliette Arent and Sarah-Jane Pyke of Arent & Pyke and the prominent landscape architect William Dangar.

The redesigned home, which received a Commendation in the Australian Institute of Architects Awards in 2014 — is sympathetic to its mid-century character, with new external elements carefully integrated into the existing envelope.

Round and round.

A six-car garage.

Apart from a small extension to the living room terrace, the footprint and the form of the building is original.

A new underground garage was created and the garden now wraps around the home, bringing a beautiful Hills Fig into focus. The pool was also rebuilt and is more a pondlike extension of the garden.

Built on a 942 sqm block, the circular house’s partly domed roof bathes the home in natural light.

A lift provides easy access to both levels. .

Comfort zone.

Terrific terraces.

Key architectural elements include expansive and retractable curved glass which wraps around the home ensuring a 270-degree view of the gardens.

The open-plan living and dining areas can be closed off when required due to concealed sliding doors.

On the first floor, there’s a sunny north-facing master retreat with built-in wardrobes and a luxurious ensuite on the first floor. This features imported Italian stone with a custom-made bath tub and shower.

Incredible design.

Sweet dreams.

There are two more bedrooms and a bathroom along with a study that could also serve as a bedroom on this level.

The huge lower level, which flows to the lawn and pool, has a media room, wet bar/kitchenette, fourth and fifth bedroom both with built-in wardrobes and ensuites plus a gym or sixth bedroom and another family bathroom.

Other features include underfloor heating, motorised blinds and reverse-cycle airconditioning.

The property is close by Scots College and Cranbrook schools.
