Protesters return to Hong Kong streets, calling for democratic reforms

Protesters in Hong Kong have returned to the streets in defiance of authorities to continue their call for democratic reforms.

Police fired tear gas at demonstrators in a bid to disperse an initially peaceful protest.

Many protesters threw bricks as they charged through the city centre, building makeshift barricades on the way.

Earlier, pro-democracy activists marched, all wearing black, and most carrying their signature umbrellas.

Protesters wearing masks were warned they were in violation of a controversial government ban on face coverings.
