MY WORST PASSPORT MISHAP WAS

Happily, I’ve never had one. But my worst day was when travelling around Europe last year with my best mate. We missed our flight, I got pooped on by a bird, I lost my credit card and then we had to get a 20-hour bus to Italy. This all happened in one day.

I GOT MY FIRST PASSPORT WHEN I WAS

Seven, in 2007.

MY PASSPORT PHOTO IS

Horrific. I went through a bit of a goth phase when I was 15, so I had really intense bangs and dead eyes. I look a bit like a serial killer.

I CAN’T STOP GOING BACK TO

New York. I’ve been almost every year for the past five years and I just can’t get enough. There is so much life there. The people are so driven and passionate, there is art everywhere and diversity is celebrated. Everything about it is wonderful except for the monster running their country.

MY LAST TRAVEL DESTINATION WAS

Europe. All my friends were on gap year last year so after I finished Doll’s House Pt 2 at the Melbourne Theatre Company, I hopped straight onto a plane and met up with them all over there for a month. We went to London, Paris, Venice, Verona and Glastonbury. It was amazing.

MY NEXT TRAVEL DESTINATION IS

I really want to go back to Italy. I fell in love with it when I was there last year. The play I did this year, A View From The Bridge, was about Italian immigrants coming from Sicily in the 1950s, so I want to see what it’s like now.

I’M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO

Learning some Italian. I am part-Italian so I think it’d be amazing to be able to speak it.

WHAT I REALLY WANT FROM MY NEXT TRIP IS

To abandon any preconceived ideas of what the trip will look like. To go in with nothing and let the trip surprise me.

I LOVE TO TRAVEL BECAUSE

I think it is so important to learn about the ways in which other cultures are different to your own. It helps you to grow in empathy, respect and understanding.

MY TRAVEL PHILOSOPHY IS

To go a bit beyond your comfort zone (while staying safe, obviously) because life is too short.

THE ONE TRAVEL MISTAKE I ALWAYS MAKE IS

I lose everything. I am so disorganised.

THE ONE THING I REALLY DO GET RIGHT WHEN I TRAVEL IS

Not knocking something till I’ve tried it. Staying open.

IF I HAD TO SIT IN THE MIDDLE SEAT, THE PASSENGERS I’D WANT ON EITHER SIDE WOULD BE

[Oscar-winning US actor] Jessica Lange, because she is the greatest actor ever and I would ask her all the questions I’ve ever had. I’m also a little bit in love with her. And on the other side, [US TV creator, director and writer] Jill Soloway, because they created, in my opinion, the best TV series ever – Transparent. They are my biggest inspirations in the world.

THE ONE FAMOUS TRAVELLER I REALLY ADMIRE IS

[British naturalist] David Attenborough. Because he is the most open-hearted, compassionate and strong-willed traveller. I adore him.

THE ONE FAMOUS PERSON I’D LIKE TO TRAVEL WITH IS

[Comedian] Hannah Gadsby. I reckon she would be a hoot to travel with because she is so funny, yet fiercely intelligent.

AIRLINE FOOD IS

Fine. If it’s food, I’ll eat it.

AIRPORT SECURITY IS

Necessary, but I always get singled out for extra scans and checks. Every time. And for no reason.

HOTELS ARE

Great. Nothing fancy required. As long as there’s some sort of bed-like surface, I’ll sleep on it.

I’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO GO TO

Greece. That’s predominantly where my family are from. Would be pretty cool to get in touch with the roots!

I’VE NEVER WANTED TO GO TO …

Oh this is tough… I want to go everywhere. Maybe Russia? I don’t want to go to Russia. Their inhumane treatment of LGBTQIA+ people is barbaric.

AISLE OR WINDOW?

Window. Always. A surface to sleep on and you get to look at the sky. It’s a win/win.
