Delhi Capitals vs Chennai Super Kings, Sharjah

Pro Tip: Make sure to utilise Shikhar Dhawan’s form and the all-round skills of Sam Curran.

Our XI: Shreyas Iyer, Faf du Plessis, Shikhar Dhawan, Marcus Stoinis, Shane Watson, MS Dhoni, Sam Curran, Ravindra Jadeja, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Shardul Thakur

Substitutes: R Ashwin, Prithvi Shaw, Karn Sharma, Ambati Rayudu

NOTE: We might not always be able to tip you off about late injury (or other relevant updates, so please finalise your team after the toss.

Player availability

  • Rishabh Pant underwent a fitness test just before the last game and didn’t look 100%. Delhi might not risk him for this game but he should be back for the next.

  • Shreyas Iyer hurt his shoulder in the last game. There is no official news on him yet but he is likely to play.

Faf du Plessis, Prithvi Shaw (Watson, Ambati Rayudu (Iyer, Alex Carey (Dhawan, MS Dhoni, Marcus Stoinis, Sam Curran, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo (Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, R Ashwin (Shardul Thakur

Captain: Shikhar Dhawan
After reaching the 30s and getting out earlier, Dhawan has struck some good form of late. He showed great intent in the game against the Rajasthan Royals, where he scored a 33-ball 57. When he is in that kind of form, it is hard to look past Dhawan. Even though he has not been at his best, Dhawan is striking at 131.52 in the powerplay the third best among all players who have faced 75 or more balls this season in that phase of the game.

Vice-captain: Sam Curran
Curran is now opening the batting and bowling for the Super Kings, giving him more chances to get maximum points. He is the highest wicket-taker for his team so far this season with nine strikes at an economy of 8.55. Curran has a strike of 190.38 with the bat too, and also has the best boundary percentage for the Super Kings – 78.78.

Hot Picks
Shane Watson: Watson is in pretty good form, with 189 runs in his last four innings. Since 2017, he has batted at No. 4 on 21 occasions, averaging 31.15 at a strike rate of 140.28, suggesting it is a suitable position for him. Watson has done well against the Capitals as well – 200 runs since 2018 at a strike rate of 136.98.

Anrich Nortje: Nortje has bowled with extreme pace and control this IPL. He has terrific numbers – ten wickets at an economy of 7.34. In the powerplay, Nortje has picked up four wickets at an economy of 6.86.

Faf du Plessis: his form has dipped slightly in the last couple of games but du Plessis scored a 37-ball 72 the last time he played in sharjah. Even though the pitches have slowed down since then, it should still help a batsman like du Plessis.

Differential Picks
Shardul Thakur: Thakur has been a consistent wicket-taker for the Super Kings. He has picked up at least one wicket in every game, and his economy is 8.27, which is on the lower side for someone who bowls an over or two at the death.

Ravindra Jadeja: Jadeja has been contributing with both bat and ball. He has scored 126 runs with a strike of 168 and has also picked up four wickets. With Sharjah slowing down and turning, he should be a handful.

Alternate Scenarios

  • Iyer is likely to feature in the Capitals XI but if he misses out, replace him with Ambati Rayudu and Thakur with a Delhi spinner.

  • Prithvi Shaw scored a brisk 64 against the Super Kings the last time these two teams met, but Deepak Chahar has had the measure of him – 38 runs in 37 balls and four dismissals in all T20s. If you want to bring him in, replace Marcus Stoinis with him.
