Make a mental note to visit the best photos collation every day. It was a major highlight of this blog in 2016 and will be again. A superb shot here of Brazilian superstar Tandara Caixeta spiking to victory against South Korea, which is a big early result in Pool A of the women’s volleyball. My London 2012 experience was looking after the volleyball media at Earl’s Court, having a bit to do with Tandara on their way to gold at that thrilling event – she’s a real gem.

Tom Daley goes again. What a presence he has been, all the way back to 2008 as a 13-year-old lad at Beijing, the face of London, the grief between times. The documentary, the exposure, the book, the coming out. The day in 2012 when he couldn’t quite, the smile he beamed with anyway. The fact that he is only 27-years-old. And tomorrow (3pm Tokyo, 7pm UK, he’ll up the top of that platform again alongside Matty Lee in the synchronised event. Don McRae has given Daley the treatment over several interviews across the journey and is the right man to set it up ahead of this last hurrah.
